For Adults (18+) and Teens ages 15 – 17

Pink Hill is renowned as a “serpentine barren,” yet the ancient grassland there is anything but barren. Serpentine barrens are globally rare ecosystems and hotspots for biodiversity, including many imperiled species. Of roughly 40 locations described a century ago in the eastern U.S., less than 20 remain, and all of those have lost species due to habitat shrinkage. Pink Hill showcases the only surviving serpentine barren of 10 that once existed in Delaware County. Hear about the barrens’ origins and links to continental collision, extinct megafauna, and Native American prehistory; see the unique landscape and some of the endangered and threatened species; and learn what Tyler is doing to restore and sustain this geological, ecological, and cultural treasure. Mid-July is when we hope to see the native Philadelphia Wood Lilies in flower, a brightly colored reddish-orange flower not often seen in our area.

This leisurely-paced hike is for adults and teens. All teens must be accompanied by an adult, and the fee is for each adult and each teen. Be prepared to walk short distances in the sun on uneven terrain. Please wear appropriate walking shoes. Sun block, sun protective clothing, and a reusable water bottle are recommended.

Please arrive by 9:20 am and drive directly to the Serpentine Barrens entrance on Barren Road, not to Tyler’s Visitor Center. Directions to the Barrens from Tyler’s main entrance: turn left onto Painter Road and then right on Barren Road. The Serpentine Barrens entrance will be on your right, within roughly ¼ mile. A guide will be stationed at the entrance to direct you to the parking area.
