SAVING SEED AND SHARING KNOWLEDGE
Saving and sharing seeds is a time-honored practice amongst gardeners that helps people plant and grow reliable varieties of their favorite foods and flowers. The practice also preserves the genetics of a species and keeps seed sources local. This year the Hardy Plant Society is hosting their volunteer seed cleaning, sorting and packaging workshops right here at Tyler Arboretum beginning on January 26th.

SCULPTURES IN NATURE
Who sculpted those roots? The tree itself! These roots belong to the native bald cypress tree (Taxodium distichum) and are called 'knees'. They are an adaptive strategy that helps bald cypresses survive and thrive in moist or waterlogged soil. These roots poke up above ground to help them access the oxygen missing from the soil around them. Take a look next time you cross over the bridge down by the pond at Tyler. We bet you'll find some of these knees yourself! They are especially easy to find in the winter when the perennial plants have died back, and they serve as a great reminder of the obstacles that trees can overcome.
