Editor’s Note: This piece was written by Natalie Ipock, our 2025 Wister Rhododendron Garden Intern. We were truly honored to have her with us this summer — her knowledge, passion and enthusiastic spirit were true assets to our Horticulture and Land Stewardship team. We wish her all the best as she continues her studies!

This summer, I had the opportunity to join Tyler’s horticulture team as the intern for the Wister Rhododendron Garden. Most days, I cared for the rhododendrons and the beautiful garden they call home. I also got to explore other areas of Tyler and take part in special experiences that deepened my love for plants and conservation.

Some highlights from my summer:

  • Pollinating chestnut trees in Tyler’s Chestnut Orchard alongside volunteers from the American Chestnut Foundation, learning about their mission to bring back this iconic tree after a devastating blight.
  • Attending the Woody Plant Conference at Scott Arboretum, where I soaked up inspiring talks from plant experts, explored their gardens on a guided tour, and connected with other horticulture professionals.
  • Participating in Intern Outreach Day at Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, joining 69 interns from 14 gardens to lend a hand in the gardens, network, and tour the preserve.

My summer at Tyler was eventful, inspiring, and full of growth—personally and professionally. I’m so grateful to Tyler Arboretum and the American Rhododendron Society for giving me this wonderful opportunity, and I can’t wait to come back and visit.
