This guide will help you feel prepared and confident as you head out to explore.

9 Hiking Tips for a Great Visit
1. Pick up a map
Stop by the Visitor Center to grab a map before you start. It’s the best way to plan your route, and staff are happy to share their favorite recommendations. You can also find the map online here.
2. Know your route & stay on the trail
Take a look at your map ahead of time and note key landmarks and intersections. Staying on marked paths keeps you safe and helps protect plants and wildlife.
3. Keep your phone charged
A charged phone is an important safety tool — use it to check your location, track your route, take photos, or call if needed. Add Tyler’s number (610-566-9134) before you go for extra peace of mind.

4. Learn to read trail blazes
Blazes are painted marks on trees that guide you along the trail.
- Single blaze ( | ) = keep straight.
- Double blaze ( | | ) = turn coming, the top blaze leans in the direction you’ll go.
- Two or more colors together = two or more trails share the same stretch for a while. When one splits off, its blaze will double to show the turn, while the other(s) keeps going straight.
Always be watching for blazes, and if you haven’t seen a blaze in a while, pause and look back — sometimes they’re easier to spot from the other direction.
5. Bring water and snacks
Even short hikes are more enjoyable with water on hand. For longer treks, snacks give you a good energy boost and a reason to pause and enjoy the scenery. If you’re hiking with kids, a small snack break can keep energy high and make the adventure feel special.

6. Dress for the day
Wear sturdy shoes and dress in removable, easy to carry layers — fall weather can change quickly. Bug spray may still be useful early in the season, and it’s always a good idea to check for ticks after spending time in the woods.
7. Check the weather before you go
Weather can change quickly in the fall. A sunny morning may turn into a windy or chilly afternoon, and strong gusts in the woods can be unsafe. Always check the forecast before you leave and pack what you might need — a light rain jacket, an extra layer, or a hat and gloves if the temperature drops.
8. Follow Leave No Trace principles
- Carry out all your trash.
- Leave plants, rocks, and wildlife as you found them.
- Share the trail kindly with other visitors.
9. Slow down and enjoy
Some of the best parts of hiking are the little details: the sound of leaves underfoot, a woodpecker tapping on a tree, the way sunlight filters through the canopy or spotting mushrooms after a rainy week. Take time to notice — it makes every hike memorable.
Heading Out Beyond the Deer Fence
Tyler Arboretum’s hiking trails begin just beyond the deer fence. Look for the gate door at the trailhead. To pass through, simply pull the pin, swing the gate open, and step through. Make sure it closes securely behind you so the fence can do its job protecting the Arboretum. Don’t worry — we won’t lock you out.
