Now that it's spring, you're probably anxiously awaiting the arrival of the beautiful dogwood blooms. Surprise, we have some blooming right now. Pictured here in the first photo, we have Cornus officinalis, Japanese cornel dogwood. But if this is a dogwood, then where are its petals? Did you know that the ‘petals’ we see in April and May are actually modified leaves called bracts?

The tree we commonly think of when dogwood comes to mind is our native beauty, Cornus florida, flowering dogwood, photo #2 which is not yet blooming. If you look closely at the flowering dogwood flowers, you’ll see the true flowers in the center, which look much like the Japanese cornel dogwood that is in bloom now.

Observe Cornus officinalis now. You can find it by the pond bridge at Tyler Arboretum, and in another month look closely at the flowering dogwoods in the Native Woodland Walk and Pinetum along our Scenic Loop.

Birds returning, flowers blooming, and leaves unfurling: these are the things that make spring. Come celebrate with us at our upcoming Spirit of Spring Fireside! Friday, April 14 from 5-8 pm, Tyler Arborteum will have a variety of nature activities, food, beer, music and more. Roast marshmallows by the fire and enjoy an evening in nature and smell of spring in the air.

It's certainly true at Tyler Arboretum this week! Every day more magnolias are blooming, and most of the Wister collection is blooming now. The Hellebores are colorful, and as you can see, we have daffodils all over! Take a walk and smell spring in the air.
