FOR ADULTS AND TEENS AGES 15-17
This ramble takes you over 300 years into the past, to when the Minshall family relocated to Middletown. We’ll begin in Ridley Creek State Park and visit the remains of the original Minshall homestead, known as Round Top, built in 1711 by Jacob Minshall. Along the way, we’ll delve into the history of the site and hear stories about what life was like for Round Top’s last residents. We’ll also explore the ancient geology beneath our feet—230-million-year-old rocks that are remnants of Pangea, including a fragment of Africa left behind during its dramatic breakup.
Please park in Ridley Creek State Park, picnic area #17, where we will meet and hike to the ruins. This is a moderately-paced hike along easily traversed but narrow trails with some small hills to climb. Bring your reusable water bottle and dress for the weather, including sturdy shoes.
There’s more to discover in Tyler’s 650 acres. Join Dr. Richard Brenner for a walk through the various eco-communities at Tyler. From seasonal wonders, living fossils, meadows, watery locations, geological treasures, conservation areas, and unexpected wildlife, Richard will expertly guide you to prime areas for an experience you will remember. Expertise from others will often be on hand for a more in-depth exploration. These rambles are for those who have a love for nature, exploring, and learning. While a description of each ramble is posted in advance, we reserve the right to make last-minute changes, including adjustments for weather and trail conditions.
