In 2019, Kent and Tamiko Stumpe joined Tyler Arboretum shortly after moving to Delaware County from the Cleveland area.
Kent recalls, “One stroll through the grounds and out onto the trails, and we joined.” That’s the magic of Tyler – one visit is all it takes to become enchanted by its beauty and tranquility.
Their journey together started in Switzerland of all places. Kent flew there to visit friends who were working in Biel/Bienne. Those friends arranged for their coworker to meet Kent’s train and let him into their apartment. That co-worker was Tamiko! Fast forward to today, and they’ve planted their roots in Delaware County, finding joy in the proximity to big city offerings, an international airport and, most importantly, getting closer to their Maryland grandsons.
Retirement and Rediscovery
The couple is now retired – Kent had a career in marketing communications and project management at BASF, and Tamiko was a pediatric physical therapist. Having more time allows Kent and Tamiko to fully embrace the perks of Tyler Arboretum membership.
“Whenever we have visitors, we always suggest a walk around Tyler, and we enjoy going there by ourselves to see the seasons change, hiking all the trails, seeing the variety in Lucille’s garden, and purchasing plants at the Spring Sale,” says Kent.
Tyler has become not just a place for nature enthusiasts but also a backdrop for making cherished memories. Their grandchildren love to explore the treehouses when they visit.
Beyond the Arboretum: Reciprocal Adventures
Another way Kent and Tamiko take advantage of their Tyler membership is with reciprocal visits to other museums and gardens. In 2023 alone their adventures have taken them all over the country. From Ithaca to Gainesville, Cheyenne to Reno, their Tyler membership has opened the door to other enriching experiences.
