Position: Tyler Arboretum’s Special Events Intern – Summer 2019
Location: 515 Painter Road, Media, PA 19063
Hours: Monday – Friday between the hours of 9am – 5pm
(4-hour shift TBD by student)
Rate: $15.00 per hour (12 hours per week for 8 weeks)
Season: June 15, 2020 – August 7, 2020
Description: The Special Events Intern will gain firsthand knowledge of the nonprofit, hospitality and wedding industries and report to the Director of Site Services.
Responsibilities: Assist the Director of Site Services with the logistical preparation for events: such as setting up tables, chairs, and signage; meeting with vendors; reviewing contracts; and greeting guests.
Qualifications: Must have ability to lift and carry materials weighing at least 30 pounds and have access to a reliable form of transportation. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel preferred. Social media experience is a plus. Must be able to communicate in a friendly, effective and professional manner.

Position Summary
The Early Childhood Educator/Naturalist is a dynamic and energetic individual, with proven experience leading programs for young children and families. The Early Childhood Educator/Naturalist will be responsible for the development and delivery of environmentally based programming for young children and their caregiver. This includes toddler/preschool and kindergarten family programming.
Availability: Position is part-time, 10 hours per week. Applicants must be available Tuesday, 8:30-11:30am and Thursday, 12:00-3:00pm to teach classes. The candidate may choose his/her schedule for the other 4 hours. Educators are expected to attend training sessions and regular staff meetings. The occasional weekend special event is also required. Up to 10 additional hours may be available teaching elementary school programs, if interested, but is not required for this position.
Compensation: $12.00 – $13.00/hour, commensurate with experience.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
- Share Tyler’s rich heritage, collections and landscape to inspire and engage stewards of the natural world
- Develop, plan and deliver nature-based programs for toddlers, and preschool/ kindergarten and their caregivers. Programs are typically 1-1.5 hours in length
- Provide a developmentally appropriate learning environment that reflects the children and caregiver’s learning and growth
- Plan ahead, set up and prepare for group arrival and clean up, including gathering and putting away equipment and supplies
- Know and understand emergency procedures associated with the organization
- Use social media, blog and other resources to promote programs

Essential Requirements
- Experience working with children ages 18 months – 6 years required
- Knowledge of early childhood developmental milestones and the appropriate strategies for teaching at these levels
- Facilitating adults involvement in their child’s learning and helping adults feel comfortable leading their own children in nature activities
- Ability to develop and lead engaging and fun environmental programming for young children with the themes of gardening and nature play
- A general understanding of vegetable/edible plants and basic garden maintenance
- Understating of how to facilitate nature play and exploration
- Experience developing curriculum and planning lessons
- Strong organizational, problem solving, computer and logistical skills, including materials management
- The desire and ability to work in a cooperative, team-oriented atmosphere
- Strong desire and ability to participate in outdoor activities with youth and staff, in all weather conditions
- First aid and CPR certification required, or willing to be trained
- Must be at least 18 years of age

Work Environment
- General work on the Arboretum’s grounds
- Requires frequent and prolonged standing, walking, bending, kneeling, pulling, twisting and climbing.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Early Childhood Educator/Naturalist will work in shared office space with a small and supportive staff. Educator will be provided with all tools necessary to complete job requirements. Position duties are split between indoor office work and outdoor activities.

Part-time Youth Program Educator
Part-time, per diem position. Reporting to the School Programs Coordinator and Youth Programs Manager.
Position Summary
The Youth Program Educator position is for a dynamic and energetic individual, with proven experience in youth education. Educators are responsible for delivering environmental education based programming to children in pre-K through 5th grades in small group settings. Youth programming at Tyler includes school field trips, school and library outreach programs, scout badge programs, and children’s eco-birthday parties. There are also opportunities for teaching family/adult programs.
Availability
Position is part-time, per diem. Programs are offered year-round and hours vary seasonally. Programs are 1-3 hours in length and often fall between the hours of 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM, Wednesday through Friday. Outreach programs sometimes fall outside of these hours. Heaviest concentration is in fall and spring. Educators are expected to work at least 3 days per week during this time, and availability for some evening and weekend programs is required (generally 3 weekend days per month). Educators are expected to attend training sessions and regular staff meetings. The occasional weekend event/festival is required.
Compensation
$11.00 – $13.00/hour, commensurate with experience.

- Set up and prepare for group arrival; clean up and put away equipment and supplies used for programs.
- Care for Tyler’s education supplies and communicating with program manager when supplies are low or need to be replaced.
- Know and understand emergency procedures associated with the organization.
Essential Requirements
- Ability to teach and lead environmental based programming.
- Willingness to be flexible in scheduling and work additional hours during the busy season.
- Desire to learn and grow as an environmental educator.
- Ability to receive and implement constructive feedback.
- At least 1 year of work/volunteer experience in education/youth development related to one or more of the following topics: outdoor activities, environmental studies, youth development, or other related topic.
- Demonstrated success at teaching outdoor activities to children; teaching experience in an outdoor setting is preferred.
- Excellent character, integrity, and adaptability.
- Ability to communicate and work with a variety of age and skill levels.
- Enthusiasm for the natural world, sense of humor, patience, and self-control.
- Must be at least 18 years of age

Weekend programming at Tyler includes scout badge programs, children’s eco-birthday parties, family/adult programs, and seasonal mini-events.
Availability
Position is part-time, per diem. Programs are offered year-round and hours vary seasonally. Heaviest concentration in fall and spring. During this period a commitment to teach at least 4 weekend days per month is required (including some evenings). Programs are 1-3 hours in length. Weekend educators are expected to attend training sessions and regular staff meetings.
