Description
An attractive shrub with colorful stems, foliage and flowers. Stems are purple-brown; dark green leaves are ovate (egg shaped) toothed, with blue undersides. Deep purple-black, male catkins, with stronge red anthers that turn yellow, are produced before leaves emerge.
Native to Japan; introduced in 1950 by J. Spek, Boskoop, Netherlands. Received RHS Award of Merit.
Grows in any soil, well suited to waterlogged areas as it requires a great amount of water. Useful on banks for erosion control
